What is read ahead?
read ahead is a multi-year grantmaking initiative and public information campaign to address the issue of literacy from early childhood through adulthood. We provide grants to strengthen literacy service providers and their programs. We reach out to volunteers, donors and those needing literacy services.
Why is the Central New York Community Foundation leading this initiative?
Addressing literacy reflects our mission - to enhance the quality of life for those who live and work within our community. Our Community Literacy Report summarizes the results of a community scan conducted by Foundation staff to determine the scope of existing literacy services and potential partners, as well as identifying opportunities, needs and gaps.
What are the adult literacy levels in our region?
Nearly 4 out of 10 adults in Onondaga and Madison counties read at or below the 8th grade level. This data is based the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey and the 1990 U.S. Census data. It is anticipated that new statistics will be available in 2005.
What is the time frame of the read ahead initiative?
read ahead is a multi-year initiative which began in 2003 and will continue through at least 2007.
Who is this initiative for?
read ahead is for the benefit of our entire community. Through grantmaking it strengthens our literacy service providers and their programs. Through a public information campaign it creates awareness of the issue and asks all to become involved. read ahead welcomes those who are:
- interested in volunteering time
- donating dollars
- seeking to improve their own literacy skills

Who is involved?
Everyone can play a role in advancing the state of literacy in our community. We are pleased to have established partnerships with businesses, grass roots organizations, government entities, educational institutions and not-for-profit agencies. Click on get involved to learn more.
Where are grants made?
Grants are made to not-for-profit organizations serving Onondaga and Madison counties in New York State.
How much has been given in grants?
Over $897,000 in grants have been made in areas such as early childhood literacy training, family literacy programs and capacity building of a literacy coalition. Click on about read ahead - grants to learn more.
